CBT Augmentation of Paroxetine Treatment of Social Phobia

Description of Study: The purpose of this study is to compare the efficacy of two different treatments for patients with social phobia (also known as social anxiety disorder). All patients will be treated with paroxetine controlled release for 12 weeks. After the first 12 weeks, study participants will remain on paroxetine or be treated with paroxetine plus cognitive behavioral therapy for an additional 16 weeks. Therapy occurs one per week for 4 months. All patients are followed for up to six additional months. All evaluations and treatment are at no charge to study participants.

Eligibility Criteria:
Male and female patients between the ages of 18 and 70 who have a primary diagnosis of social phobia, as defined by DSM-IV. Patients cannot have a current unstable mental illness.
