The Treatment of Children with Comorbid Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Anxiety

Description of Study: In the current study, children ages 8-12 will be treated with a psychosocial treatment combining parent management training and family-based anxiety treatment. After the screening phase of the study, there will be a pre-treatment assessment to determine study eligibility. Treatment will consist of both baseline and treatment phases. Children will be randomized to either a two, three, or four week waiting period. After the waiting period, treatment will proceed with 10, 90-minute sessions conducted on a weekly basis. Treatment will be provided free of charge and children will be compensated with a gift certificate of their choice at the end of treatment. Following treatment, assessments will be conducted 1 week after treatment and 1 month after treatment.
Eligibility criteria:
a) 8 to 12 years of age
b) current DSM-IV diagnosis of ADHD, Combined Type
c) a comorbid DSM-IV diagnosis of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), social phobia (SOP), or separation anxiety disorder (SAD)
Exclusion criteria:
a) meeting full diagnostic criteria for an autism spectrum disorder
b) meeting full diagnostic criteria for bipolar disorder
c) current and acute psychotic symptoms
d) current psychosocial or medication treatment for ADHD or anxiety symptoms
e) estimated IQ less than 80
f) the presence of any other conditions that require treatment prior to the treatment of ADHD and anxiety.
