Are you currently living with Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD)? 

If so, you could be eligible to participate in this research study is to pilot test cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) delivered through a Smartphone application (“app”). We hope this new technology-delivered treatment will help increase access to CBT for BDD. Study participants complete the app-based CBT on their Smartphone, as part of a pilot trial. We are seeking individuals age 18 or older with body image concerns. Participation includes: clinical interviews and assessments, questionnaires, and use of the treatment app on your Smartphone. Compensation is provided.

Eligibility Criteria

You can be eligible for this study if you meet these requirements:

  • at least 18 years of age
  • outpatients
  • current diagnosis of primary DSM-5 BDD
  • Score on BDD-YBOCS of  20
  • currently living in the United States (does not have to be Boston!)
Exclusion Criteria

You can be excluded from this study if:

  1. Psychotropic medication changes within 2 months prior to enrollment
    1. Participants taking psychotropic medication have to have been on a stable dose for at least 2 months prior to enrollment and not change medication during study period
  2. Participated in CBT for BDD within the past 12 months
  3. Current substance dependence
  4. Lifetime bipolar disorder or psychosis
  5. Acute, active suicidal ideation
  6. Current severe comorbid major depression, defined by a PHQ-9 total score  20
  7. Personality disorder that could jeopardize treatment participation (e.g., borderline personality disorder with self-harm)
  8. Concurrent psychological treatment
  9. Do not own a supported mobile Smartphone with a data plan  (currently iPhone 5S or more recent, running iOS 9 or newer)
