May 21, 2026
1:00 PM - 2:00 PM EDT

Presented in collaboration with ADAA’s Women’s Mental Health Special Interest Group.

Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) is a serious and often misunderstood condition that goes far beyond typical premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and may affect mental health.

Many people experience emotional and physical changes during the menstrual cycle, but for some, these symptoms become severe enough to disrupt daily life.

This presentation by Jessica Pineda, MD, and moderator Sohye Kim, PhD, reviews the symptoms of premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) and how to distinguish it from premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and the typical emotional and physical changes that occur across the menstrual cycle. The discussion explores the underlying neurobiology that contributes to the development of PMDD symptoms and discuss a range of evidence-based treatment options, including medications, lifestyle interventions, and hormonal therapies.

This session is designed for patients, caregivers, and anyone interested in learning more about PMDD and the science behind effective treatment.

Learning Objectives:

  • Review the diagnosis of PMDD
  • Review hormonal changes during menstrual cycle and their potential impact on mood symptoms
  • Identify evidence-based treatment options
