Humanity-in-the-Loop as a Requirement for Mental Health Work: How to Calibrate AI for the Head and the Heart

Artificial intelligence is rapidly entering mental health care, offering powerful tools to extend clinical reasoning, streamline workflows, and increase access to evidence-based treatment. 

Yet mental health work is not solely a technical problem to be optimized. It requires attunement, judgment, and ethical care, qualities that cannot be outsourced. Mental health work also benefits from the passion and craftsmanship of clinicians who have chosen a career defined by the ongoing refinement of complex skills. 

This webinar introduces a “humanity-in-the-loop” framework, arguing that the appropriate role of AI must be calibrated based on both the type of clinical reasoning required (the “head”) and the human values at stake (the “heart”).

Building on emerging models of human-AI teaming, the talk will describe how AI can function as a form of external cognition that enhances, rather than replaces, clinician expertise. At the same time, it will address the growing risk of “cognitive surrender,” in which clinicians or patients over rely on AI outputs at the expense of clinical intuition and judgment. 

Through concrete examples across assessment, case formulation, and intervention, attendees will learn 

• practical strategies for integrating AI in ways that preserve fidelity,
• strengthen therapeutic relationships, and
• support patient outcomes. 

The goal is not simply to keep humans “in the loop,” but to ensure that humanity remains at the center of mental health care.
