Ode to Bipolar Disorder

Ode to Bipolar Disorder

by Augustine Raynelle

Packed away in a box
Some sticks, paper and string
Stored up high in the closet
Since sometime last spring
The bag never was opened
And the price tag still on it
Right after I bought it
Then I didn’t want it
To put it all together
Was a lot of work I knew
But today was a Saturday
And there was nothing much to do
To my utter amazement
My task was completed
I drove to the lake
For once, undefeated
The drifting white clouds
Looked like cotton candy
The waves lapping the shore
And the beach, warm and sandy
The beautiful day
Lost on not even me
Just for this moment, living...
Was not such a bad thing to be
The kite soared in the sun
In the bright summer sky
It dipped, then flew higher
It crested and dived
It had never felt such a freedom
By the wind, carried and tossed
But then the world noticed
And the moment was lost
The day remained perfect
In the air not a sound
And then for no reason
The kite crashed to the ground
