This presentation provides an overview of cardiovascular-bipolar connection spanning from epidemiology to blood biomarkers and imaging approaches. The relevance of the cardiovascular-bipolar link to the conceptualization and treatment of bipolar disorder is emphasized, along with the potential for this link to mitigate stigma.

The association of physical health metrics with bipolar disorder and other severe psychiatric disorders is generally viewed as a byproduct of the lifestyle and pharmacological treatments associated with these conditions. The presentation highlights potential mechanistic associations of the vascular-bipolar connection, and integrates the implications of these findings to screening and treatment.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Identify factors underlying elevated cardiovascular risk in bipolar disorder
  2. Recognize the relevance of vascular metrics to brain structure and function, and psychiatric symptoms
  3. Consider the advantages of integrating heart health in the management and conceptualization of bipolar disorder
