A Journey of Faith, Hope and Love

A Journey of Faith, Hope and Love

by Maura Crowley

My first step out of the shadow of my struggle was difficult. I was just a teenager when I developed anorexia and obsessive compulsive disorder. Later came severe anxiety and panic attacks.

This occurred in the 1980s when there really wasn't much awareness or treatment options available.

I felt ashamed and alone. The anxiety was like a dark shadow that followed me everywhere. I isolated myself from everyone. When I could hide my struggle no longer and opened up to others and received love, understanding, and support - I felt relief.

It's been quite a while since I was that fearful teenager. Now there is more awareness and resources like ADAA which offer education and support as well as an opportunity to share and come together. Reading about others journeys makes me feel hopeful.

Although I am still on my journey, I know I am not alone. I am so grateful to my loving family, my friends, my strong faith, my treatment team, and to all who provide help to others.

Thank you for letting me share my journey of faith, hope, and love.
