University of Florida,College of Medicine - Assistant/Associate Professor - Psychiatry +

The Department of Psychiatry at the University of Michigan is seeking a full-time, tenure or clinical-track faculty member with expertise in adult Anxiety Disorders. We seek a motivated psychiatrist to join one of the country’s first academic Anxiety Clinics, now evaluating ~500 new patients each year and offering state-of-the-art psychopharmacologic and psychotherapeutic treatments. Interest and skills in both research and clinical care are important, but the balance can be adapted to individual strengths. Specific interests can focus on any of the anxiety disorders (and, yes, we still consider OCD to be an anxiety disorder), and research interests can involve neuroimaging, psychoneuroendocrinology, genetics and genomics, sleep, clinical trials (using meds and/or psychotherapy), health services research, and substance abuse (all areas in which we have existing expertise and willing collaborators and mentors). We are also open to developing new areas of foci and expertise. The ideal candidate will either be starting to build a research portfolio in an anxiety-related domain, with potential to obtain independent research funding, or have the skills and interests needed to develop into a clinical leader, or both.

This position will report through the Anxiety Clinic Program Director (Dr. Abelson, who has run the Program for 22 years, following 18 years of leadership by George Curtis, MD).

Clinical, Educational, and Administrative Activities
We encourage all members of our Anxiety Program to become active participants on our highly vibrant, inter-disciplinary clinical team (with psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, nurse practitioners, and trainees from all disciplines). We expect involvement in this clinical operation, including supervision of psychiatry residents rotating in the Anxiety Clinic.  Future clinic leadership is possible for the right candidate. Distribution of effort between clinical, research and educational activities is open to negotiation. Considerable flexibility is possible, though external funding is needed to sustain longer term research effort. All of our faculty physicians also provide a small amount of hospital-based clinical services (weekend rounding on our inpatient unit 2-3 times per year and telephone back-up to residents on night call in our Psychiatry Emergency Services, 6 nights per year, from home).

Primary educational duties involve staffing and supervising psychiatry residents in the Anxiety Clinic. There are also opportunities to provide didactics in our resident core as well as opportunities to help train our social workers, psychologists, and nurses.

All faculty participate in routine administrative activities (e.g., attending Academic Staff, All-Staff, team meetings).  There will also be opportunities for administrative/leadership development for those interested and appropriately skilled.

Required Qualifications
Applicants must hold MD or DO degrees and have completed a psychiatric residency. Fellowship and additional post-training experience is a plus. A beginning track record in extramural research funding is important for applicants who want to focus significant time on scientific activities. Possession of a license to practice medicine in the State of Michigan is required before on-boarding can be completed. Applicants must be board certified or board eligible in Psychiatry. We are particularly seeking applicants who show promise for an academic career that spans research, clinical care, teaching and leadership/administration. Superior clinical competencies and master teacher skills highly valued.

Candidates should submit a CV and letter of interest to:

A postdoctoral scientist with extensive neuroimaging or EEG experience is sought to work on NIH-funded clinical trial research. This work uses fMRI and EEG to examine how cognitive behavioral therapy modulates networks underlying threat reactivity and anxiety regulation in children and adolescents with OCD and/or anxiety disorders. EEG and EMG are also used to test engagement of the same networks before and after a novel effortful control training intervention in clinically anxious preschoolers. The expected impact of these projects is an improved understanding of brain networks relevant for early onset anxiety, enabling neuromodulatory therapy sensitive to illness stage via cognitive training and/or brain stimulation techniques. We are particularly excited about candidates with a strong background in fMRI methods who are also strong writers. We want someone who can jump right into data analysis and manuscript write-up. Research, training, education, and mentorship are offered in the context of the PI’s lab which interfaces with very active group pursuing mechanistic and translational research in psychiatric disorders in adult and pediatric populations using a variety of brain mapping modalities. The candidate will have access to state-of-the-art brain imaging facilities and computational resources at the University of Michigan. Applicants should have a Ph.D. in a relevant field (e.g. clinical, developmental, cognitive or social psychology or neuroscience).  Please email a CV, statement of research interests and relevant background to Dr. Kate Fitzgerald at [email protected].
